Taking a Look at Stereotypes

The Year 10 assembly delivered by Mr Major, Subject Leader – Humanities, encompassed SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) Week with the theme ‘The Global Role of Women’.

Students learned of the different ways societies around the world have stereotyped the roles women play and have been expected to play. The presentation explored how attitudes to colour and gender have been changing, helped by the actions of a number of courageous, ground-breaking, women such as Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, Lieutenant Colonel Malalai Kakar, Sarah Attar, Malala Yousafzai, and Ellen DeGeneres.

Each had the ability to challenge contemporary thinking and beliefs as to what their role should be, overcoming difficult circumstances and situations in the process. Their actions have achieved much for us to celebrate, giving girls in this country what others around the world would see as enviable openings and prospects.

Let us make sure we take every opportunity!
