PSHE Education

As a part of students’ education at Prenton High School, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), along with Health Education, has been made compulsory in all primary and secondary schools by the Department for Education as of September 2020. As a result of the coronavirus, there is a delay in the required teaching start date, which is now the Summer term in 2021.

As a school with PSHE provision already embedded in our curriculum there have not been many changes to our implementation. Throughout the curriculum, RSE lessons will include teaching about: healthy relationships, including friendships and intimate relationships; families; growing and changing, including puberty; personal hygiene; changing feelings; becoming more independent; keeping safe and consent; developing self-esteem and confidence. Students will also have opportunities to ask questions that help prepare them for different relationships in the modern world.

PSHE education is currently taught throughout the school in every year group during extended form time and is monitored and reviewed regularly. All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values: Trust, Respect, Integrity, Kindness, Endeavour.

We wish to make you aware that parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of the sex education delivered as part of the statutory RSE following a meeting with the Headteacher. There is no right to withdraw from Relationships Education or Health Education or any content from the statutory Science curriculum. This means that students cannot be withdrawn from lessons on the Changing Adolescent Body. Details of this can be found in our new RSE policy.

As a school community, we are committed to working in partnership with parents. We would like to consult with parents and invite you to find out more about what your child will learn, view the materials and resources being used in lessons and discover how you can best support your child to discuss these topics at home. We have also updated our RSE policy which we wish to share with you, outlining our provision and how we meet our statutory requirements.

In addition to this information, please find below, links to an Information Guide for Parents, a presentation explaining PSHE and RSE at Prenton and an overview of our PSHE programme.

You have an opportunity to provide feedback through a survey provided in the ‘Forms’ section of your ParentMail account so please do share your views.

I am sure that you will find the documents informative and hope that they offer reassurance that we are covering this essential part of your child’s development thoroughly, appropriately and sensitively. Please do not hesitate to contact school if you have questions that cannot be answered through the attached materials or via the survey.
